JANUARY 24
  Exodus 16:8 -- Exodus 19:13
ISRAEL & AMALEK: ENEMIES TODAY

Exodus 17:13
"And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword."
Brave Joshua raged a battle against Israels enemy, the people called the Amalekites. If you remember, it was during that war that Moses held his hands up as he stood high on hill above the fray. As long as they were stretched towards the sky, Israel would win. But when weariness hit his body, Moses hands dropped. Then the Amalekites would gain the advantage.
This seesaw battle went on and on. Seeing the problem, Aaron and Hur rushed to Moses side. They found a stone upon which their tired leader could sit. Then they held his hands high for victory.
Amelek was an awful people. Many feel that enemy were descendants of Esau, Isaac's son. Others feel that clan was in the land during the days of Abraham. Amalek is a name given to the Amorites and the Canaanites, as well as to the Hyksos.
If you recall, Saul spared Agag, the king of the Amalekites. That was a sin! That heathen group kidnaped David's wives and others at Ziklag. It was an Amalekite who slew King Saul and took the fallen leader's crown to David.
In the book of Esther, we learn that Haman was an Agagite. To win the battle with Amalek in the days of Moses in the wilderness was a step in a good direction. God wanted them destroyed. It was such a glorious, newsworthy victory that God told Moses to write the results of that wilderness war in a book.
In gratitude, Moses build an altar and called it JEHOVAHNISSI (the Lord my banner). It was a war monument. "I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven" was God's promise. The children of Israel and Amalek would be enemies forever.
In later years, some euphemistically speaking of Hitler called him an Amalekite; and Rabbi Israel Hess claimed that the Palestinians were Amalekites. Israelis president Itzhak Ben-Zvi, in refusing mercy to Adolf Eichmann, repeated Samuel's words to Agag (I Samuel 15:33): "As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women." (ysw)

"IT IS GOD THAT GIRDETH ME WITH STRENGTH AND HE MAKETH MY WAY PERFECT!"
I have no strength, He girdeth me. My way is hard, He girdeth me. Some days it seems I cannot put forth any energy. I have learned that God is not necessarily glorified by our energies UNLESS HE IS OUR STRENGTH IN THEM!" (GGS)
(Psalm 18:32)

And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent. And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. (Genesis 18:10)

  Exodus 13:3 -- Exodus 16:7
MEMORIAL STONES ARE GOOD

Exodus 13:14
"When thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this?"
Children are curious people. They want to know why? So when the Israelites observed the Passover every year, it was only natural for a child to ask, "WHY?"
What a story the parents had to tell them! The little ones would learn of the "Passover lamb" and the death of all the first-borns where the blood of that lamb was not applied. Then the children would learn of the flight from Egypt by their relatives. They would learn of the parting of the Red Sea, of Moses' strength and faith, of the Pharaoh's hard heart and his armies, of chariots pursuing and drowning, of the sea's waters opening and closing. They would learn of the exuberance and adoration of the people as their prime enemies were dead.
Then the parents, if they were truthful, would tell of the complaining people, the very ones whom God had protected. They would learn how their forefathers decided life in Egypt was better than the unknown wilderness. The little ones would learn of the complaining--the lack of water, the fear, the ungrateful disbelief! The children would learn their relatives' faith in God was spasmodic. They would hear of the Israelites murmuring against Moses and Aaron, and would wonder at the ungratefulness of their great-grandparents.
But you and I are no different. We have wonderful spiritual journeys. We see our needs supplied. We find comfort and solace in the arms of God. But then, we begin to complain over some minor lack, or some slight from another person towards us. We complain! How sad and how human are we mortals!
Let us determine to be different and do all things without murmurings and complaining. Then we will discover, if we do not know it already, that we are just as human as those Israelites long ago who wanted to return to worldly Egypt. Let's try not to be like them! (ysw)

"THE WALK WITHIN MY HOME" (Psalm 101:2)
"I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. . . I will walk within my house with a perfect heart!" What a lovely and timely motto for a Christian woman to have before her. To "BE LIKE JESUS ALL DAY LONG IN THE HOME AND IN THE THRONG" is not as easy to do as to sing. "Oh, Lord Jesus , teach me to behave myself wisely within my house!" (GGS)

  Exodus 10:8 -- Exodus 13:2

MOSES REMEMBERED BY HIS PEERS

Exodus 11:3
"Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight of the people"
Perhaps you would not choose this verse as important because, in future chapters, we will read of the death of all the first-born of every house, barn, and field in the land of Egypt. Only those who applied the blood of a lamb would be spared.
I was impressed with the fact that Moses, with one more plague in the wings, was well thought-of in that land of soon-coming death and tears. The Egyptian people must have remembered him when he was a youth. They remember him when he lived in the previous Pharaoh's palace. For some reason they liked him.
The children and young people of Moses' former days had now grown up into adults. They had matured as Moses grew in grace, laboring with sheep and wind there in the area of his "burning bush" experience. They remembered him. How could they forget the story of the baby pulled from the Nile by the Princess?
Even then, God was grooming the leader who would deliver his oppressed people! Perhaps they did not accept the message of a soon-coming DESTROYER. But they knew Moses! They may not have understood their nation's approaching, unexplainable grief, but the common people saw Moses as a "great" man. No wonder their women showered the Deliverer of Israel with jewelry of silver and gold! (ysw)

"SAFETY" (Psalm 4:8)
I will both lay me down in peace and sleep "For thou, Lord, only maketh me dwell in safety!" To be able to go to bed at night Knowing that we are under the blood --Justified and declared righteous-- Should give us peace and rest and relaxation. HE ONLY MAKES ME DWELL SAFELY! (GGS)

Exodus 7:15 -- Exodus 10:17

DIVISIONS BRING COURAGE

Exodus 8:23
"And I will put a division between my people and thy people. . ."
God has a way of dividing people from one another and from things, as well as groups and organizations. It was of interest to me this morning to see that He divided the Israeli slaves, bound in Egypt, from the powerful Egyptian Pharaoh and his people. Moses was assigned by God, with the help of Aaron his brother, to lead Israel out of Egypt.
How was he to do this? I am sure Moses wondered, too. God had a way! He always does. He drove hard-hearted Pharaoh to scream out at Moses, "Be gone!" All the awful plagues, found in these chapters and following, ended in the death of every first born of man or animal in the land. "GO! GO! GO!" cried the king!
But, did you notice in verse 32-b of chapter 12, that Pharaoh implored Moses, "Bless me!" How like those who criticize us. Often in their need, they come to us for help! (ysw)

"CIRCUMCISION OF THE HEART" (Joshua 5:3, 8)
It is a type of "separation." To be "separated" means to walk alone. Each person must have it personally, and bear its pain. It was commanded by God at that time after they crossed over the Jordan River. A sharp knife is used. THE WORD OF GOD IS A SHARP KNIFE! It hurts our pride! It hurts our pride! It costs us friends. It makes "separated Christian" a marked people. The wounds of separation exchange the reproach of Egypt (the world) for the reproach Christ! (GGS)

Exodus 4:17 -- Exodus 7:14

A WIFE IS A WIFE NO MATTER WHAT

Exodus 4:20
"AND MOSES TOOK HIS WIFE AND HIS SONS. . .TO. . . EGYPT. . ."

I think of Zipporah as a woman of the wilderness. She was a shepherdess. Her skin was wind-blown and sun-scorched. Though she was a queen of a woman, she was no pampered palace princess. Some feel Moses' spouse was a black woman. Others have a contrary opinion. Moses brought her and their son "home" to Egypt, a place she had never been.
It was there, that she saw first hand her husband's mission. It was to deliver his people from bondage. For Moses it was not a return to "pomp and glory," but a return to rejection and ridicule. I do not know if Zipporah knew the difficulty that would be her husband's job.
Many a wife has had to endure the rebuffs that come when her husband chooses the right path even, if rejection comes along in his coat pocket. We should take a fresh look at this wife of the meekest man on earth and learn from her. (ysw)
"LORD, IS IT I?" Today, as I read the account of the "Last Supper" and heard the disciples ask, "Lord is it I?" I, too, wondered about my feeble heart and feared lest, while "looking" at others, I might also deny my Lord! If we women would look first to our own motives and deeds, we would look less at others in criticism. (GGS)

JANUARY 19
Genesis 50:24 -- Exodus 4:13

A CHILD'S BIRTH MEMORIES

Exodus 1:21-22
"I have been a stranger in a strange land."
I think of the loneliness of Moses. There he was in a "strange land," married to a woman very unlike the women of Egypt whom he knew, or even like his birth-mother. There he was a father for the first time in a strange land. His whole life had taken on a new persona. He no longer had the status of the adopted child of a princess or even the birth-son of a slave. He was a shepherd out in the sun, away from the pleasures of Egypt.
As Moses gazed at his baby son, little Gershom, he was overcome with his circumstances. It was then that he cried, "I have been a stranger in a strange land." How like many of us, like Moses, have journeyed far from our place of birth. We are literally in a "strange land." Now we are adjusting to the present and pushing away from our past. May God use us as He did Moses in such circumstances. Soon we will not be "strangers" in a "strange land." We will be at "HOME!" (ysw)

"OUR LIFE IS A VAPOR"

(James 4:14)
Has there been a death of some one near and dear? What is the lesson in this for me?
This loss should jolt us to take stock of our life.
Is it pleasing to the Lord? Are we ready to meet Him?
How is the ledger of my life if He should suddenly call my name?
What have I done?
The death of a dear one should teach us to do what we can to please and help others
while they are here, so there will be no regrets when they go. (GGS)

Genesis 47:25 -- Genesis 50:23

NO ESCAPE IN DEATH

GENESIS 47:29
"And the time drew nigh that Israel must die."
The older we become, the more we realize that God's Word is true when it says that it is appointed unto man that he or she must die. It is the final event in everyone's life. We cannot escape it. We cannot practice for it. There can be no dress rehearsal. May I be so close to the Lord, that when my death comes, I will slip to the other side in peace. I do not want to make a scene. But we cannot know what death does to us, nor how we will behave.
From all I have been told by those who were there, I believe David, our son, though in pain, went HOME quickly, bravely, and welcoming his final end. His breath was taken from him--that holy "life-breath" that had been passed down to him from Adams day to us in this century. My mother had a failing-end with days of departing--not month upon month and years. My father died instantly in his wheel chair in his yard.
May God be gracious to you and me in death. It is all part of that "unknown future." We wonder what Heaven will be like. What joy it be to see Jesus! "Not my will, but Thine be done! " (ysw)

"I AM HELPED"
(Psalm 28:7)
The Lord is my strength and my shield. My heart trusted in Him and I am helped. Therefore, my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song will I praise Him. Since He is our shield and defense in this life, and our strength for the day's battle, we grieve the heart of God when we try to defend and sustain our self. Rejoicing and song come only from a heart which is helped by trusting in Him. (GGS)

Genesis 45:2 -- Genesis 47:24

A BROTHER'S LOSS BRINGS GRIEF

GENESIS 45:14
"And he fell upon his brother Benjamins neck, and wept. . ."
Joseph was overwhelmed with sorrow and joy! These must have been his feelings when he saw his youngest brother, Benjamin. They had the same mother. They were from the same womb. But years of separation were between them. They were strangers.
Benjamin had thought Joseph was dead. Joseph had heard not one word from Benjamin or any of his family since he was seventeen years old. Now Joseph was thirty and a ruler in Egypt. What a change from that dirty teen-age youth, that had been pulled from the mud pit.
I remember when I saw my younger sister, Beverly, after many months of absence. We were adults. She was moved to see me--and I her. She did not want to let me go! Beverly was brain-damaged from birth. I was not sure she really cared about me. In truth, I was all she had left of our family. And she for me. Our parents and other sister had long-died. We were from the same womb. As I read of Joseph and his meeting with Benjamin that long-ago day in Egypt, I thought about Beverly. I reflected on Josephs mixed emotions as he hugged Benjamin to his heart. There is a bond between siblings which cannot be explained. (ysw)

"WATER BY THE WAY OF EDOM"
(II Kings 3:8-2)
God can send help from unlikely sources!
We are to expect help, and make ready for the blessing!
He will send water from a desert, if necessary.
The way He answers our prayers is often a mystery.
The thousands and thousands of prayers that ascend
Have as many kinds of answers, as the prayers that are prayed. (GGS)

Genesis 42:23 -- Genesis 45:1

THE HELPLESSNESS OF FAILURE

GENESIS 42:28,36
"What is this that God hath done unto us"
Often, because of our own misdeeds and failures, we human beings blame God for our troubles. It is hard for us to admit the failures that have come into our lives. Often these failures are a result of our own foolishness and lack of discernment. OFTEN WE RUSH AHEAD WITHOUT LEANING ON GODLY WISDOM! We want our own way! We want our own things! We want our own wisdom! We tend to reject spiritual leadership from our Heavenly Shepherd.
Catastrophes, unwise friendships, and unhealthy situations often come into our lives because we fail to keep close to Jesus. Then we cry out, "All these things are against me." (ysw)

"IN HER TONGUE IS THE LAW OF KINDNESS"
(Proverbs 31:26)
Let this "law" govern my way in my life before the family and others. Let it control my speaking, and let me grieve when I break this Heavenly law. (GGS)

My Daily Blessing from My Daily Bible Reading
with meditations by my mother, Poetess Gertrude Sanborn
JANUARY 15
Genesis 40:18 -- Genesis 42:22
GRACE IN FORGETTING
GENESIS 41:39-51
"God hath made me forget all my toil, and all my fathers house."
Today in Genesis, we read that Joseph rose from prison to praise. He married Asenath, the daughter of the Egyptian priest of 0n. They had a son whom he named MANASSEH which means "God hath made me forget all my toil and all my father's house." When I reflect upon Joseph, I realize that he had much to forget and forgive. I think of the events and people in my life that I must forgive and forget.
I marvel at Joseph who was sold and abandoned by his own family. Contemplate all he had to adjust to, all he had to put out of his mind as he had to live in "adversity" and "advantage."
I think of the hurts in our lives that keeps returning to us. I don't want them, but they return. Regrets come! Fear that the situation will return in some form or another.
Joseph never knew when he would be rejected again. He never really knew if his Pharaoh would turn on him as his brothers and Potiphar had done in the past. Those whom he had trusted and served had turned on him. He had come to realize that his only surety was his God! (ysw)

"THE LORD YOUR GOD GOETH BEFORE YOU AND WILL FIGHT FOR YOU!" (DEUTERONOMY 1:30)
Believe it and trust Him in the impasse and the impossible. (GGS)
